From the Novus Vault: Nokia Lumia 830

For nearly two decades, Novus Labs has been constructing an extensive interoperability library and collecting remarkable devices. This week we pull the Nokia Lumia 830 from the vault — a sleek Windows Phone that captured a moment when smartphone design met bold color, solid build, and a uniquely fluid user experience.

Released in October 2014 and marketed as an affordable flagship, the Lumia 830 paired a metal frame and removable back with a 10 MP PureView camera, Zeiss optics, and optical image stabilization. It was one of the last Lumia devices released under the Nokia name before Microsoft fully absorbed the brand — and a fitting snapshot of where Windows Phone was reaching at its peak.

Highlights

  • Marketed as an affordable flagship Windows Phone 8.1 device
  • 10 MP PureView camera with Zeiss optics and optical image stabilization
  • Metal frame paired with a removable polycarbonate back
  • microSD expansion for storage up to 128 GB
  • Wireless charging support (variant-dependent)
  • Bold color options: black, white, orange, and green

Key Specifications

  • 5.0-inch TFT IPS LCD display (720 × 1280)
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 (MSM8926) chipset
  • Windows Phone 8.1 operating system
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0 + A2DP

  • Released October 9, 2014

Significance

The Lumia 830 represented one of the last ambitious Nokia-branded Windows Phone designs before Microsoft fully absorbed the brand. It delivered flagship-tier features — PureView imaging, OIS, wireless charging — at a mid-range price, and its bold color palette helped cement the Lumia line's distinctive design language.

It stands today as a compelling snapshot of a smartphone era that almost was — a reminder of how close Windows Phone came to being a third viable mobile platform.
